Kansai International Airport (KIX) in Osaka, Japan, has a remarkable track record of never losing a piece of luggage since its inauguration in September 1994. Located on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, the airport serves as a major hub for the city and welcomed nearly 14 million passengers last year.

The airport's outstanding baggage handling performance contrasts sharply with the situation in the U.S., where domestic flights lose around 3 million bags annually, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. KIX has received international accolades for its baggage delivery, winning awards eight times.

Tsuyoshi Habuta, who has been working at Kansai Airport for 17 years, manages baggage operations for one of the handling companies at the airport. He emphasizes that their success is due to a combination of responsibility, teamwork, and a precise system for arranging bags before departure. Multiple layers of checks are in place to ensure no luggage goes missing.

Despite the impressive record, the airport spokesperson Momoka Wakabayashi insists there is no secret formula to their success. Instead, it is the result of daily efforts and careful work by everyone involved, including airlines and handling companies.

One notable aspect of their meticulous approach is how arrival baggage is placed on the carousel. Habuta's team ensures that each suitcase handle faces outward, making it easier for passengers to retrieve their bags. This attention to detail exemplifies the spirit of Japanese hospitality.

Kansai Airport is preparing for a significant increase in passenger numbers, expecting to handle up to 37 million travelers next year. This surge is anticipated due to the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, which is expected to attract over 20 million visitors. Despite the looming influx, Habuta remains confident and dedicated to maintaining the airport's spotless baggage record. He aims to make the airport an exciting and vital place for everyone to use, underscoring a commitment to continuous learning and improvement to ensure passenger satisfaction.
