The County of Simcoe plans to apply for Transport Canada aerodrome certification for the Lake Simcoe Regional Airport (LSRA). This certification is needed to offer scheduled passenger flights at the airport, located in Oro-Medonte Township. The county council has approved the application process, stating that it will benefit the public and stimulate economic growth.

The airport has allocated $200,000 for the certification. Once certified, the yearly operating costs will be between $17,500 and $26,500. The airport is already busy and has recent upgrades like a widened runway and new lighting. Additional upgrades costing up to $75,000 may be needed after an audit by Transport Canada.

Support will be sought from local authorities and politicians. The airport is mostly owned by the county (90%) and partially by Barrie (10%).
