Milan Linate Airport launches FaceBoarding

Milan Linate Airport has launched a new biometric facial recognition system called FaceBoarding, allowing passengers to pass through the airport and board flights without showing documents or boarding passes. This service is available to adult travelers with biometric passports or identity cards who register at kiosks near check-in island 8.

A mobile app for registration will be available next month. Travelers can register for either a single flight or for a year (initial registrations valid until December 31, 2025). The service features a dedicated FaceBoarding security entry with a fast-track lane and two other lanes.

Initially, the service is available for passengers of ITA Airways and SAS. Milan Linate assures that facial images are not stored but used to create a biometric template for security checks. Personal data is stored in encrypted form and deleted within specific time frames based on passenger consent.

Additionally, facial recognition technology might soon replace the need for passports at UK borders. However, increased reliance on technology poses risks, as shown by a recent nationwide outage of eGates at major UK airports, causing significant delays.
